Deborah and David's introduction email made a lasting impression on me. It began with two film photos of them enjoying bagels in New York (they have a love for food), sharing their favorite ice cream flavors, movies, and even their guesses for how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop (please feel free to submit your guesses with your wedding inquiry). I instantly felt a connection with them. Deborah and David have a strong affinity for nature, so Garfield Park Conservatory was a perfect fit to have their Chicago wedding.
The day began with Deborah preparing for the day at her apartment in Ukrainian Village. As a designer and photographer, Deborah had the perfect spot in the hallway for their first look. (Complete with Deborah's neighbor who came out to recycle a pizza box.) Deborah and David took the time to savor quiet moments together, exchanging personal vows on Deborah's couch, where they had spent many hours enjoying games and movies.
Next, we traveled to The Garfield Park Conservatory, home to a diverse selection of flora. The groomsmen opted for a timeless look with tuxedos, while the bridesmaids stood out in vibrant, unique colors. Deborah and her friends also put their creativity to work by crafting the floral arrangements in the reception hall. After the ceremony, we took a group shot with all the guests amidst giant birds of paradise, and I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing this photo in 30 or so years.
After the cocktail hour, Deborah and David changed their clothes for a Paebaek. A Paebaek is a traditional Korean ceremony where the couple pours tea and pays respect to their parents. During this ceremony, the couple holds a cloth between them while their parents throw dates and chestnuts onto the cloth, symbolizing the number of children they will have. The ceremony concludes with the couple giving each other piggyback rides.
At the reception, a trivia game based on Deborah and David was played, and they danced the night away, bringing down the house (and the pipe and drape). The night ended with a bowl of instant ramen. As every night should.
If you are planning a Chicago wedding, I would love to be in touch. Between January and July, I will based part time Chicago as my partner completes her graduate program in photography preservation.
