Being asked by a photographer to document their wedding already brings a certain level of stress, questioning myself if am I good enough to do this or am I a fraud? But getting asked by a photographer who is marrying a wordsmith/style savant definitely ups the ante. I was on vacation in Hawaii when I took a call from Anjli and Derek about their Mattie’s at Green Pastures wedding. Although the cafe was a little loud from the ensuing happy hour, I distinctly remember it all disappearing when engaging with these two. We talked about how they first met, their long-distance endeavors, and the adoption of their beloved dog Charlie. Their Austin wedding would be a laid back casual affair, ceremony at Mattie’s, next day cocktail reception at their favorite coffee shop Houndstooth.
While I have been to a few Indian ceremonies in my career, nothing preps you for the vibrant energy that infects everyone, especially at the baraat. The baraat is essentially the groom’s processional, usually riding a horse, to the wedding venue. So yes, I am expecting the groom to be decked out on a horse equally adorned in colour decoration. Likewise, I expected them to be accompanied by the dhol and a procession of people. Yet, I was not expecting it to be led by a DJ on an F-150, and boy, did that certainly liven things up. Noses were pulled, pots were smashed and the ceremony was underway. The ceremony was held in the backyard of Mattie’s, with everyone being greeted by peacocks. After the ceremony, everyone was treated to lunch, and Anjli and Derek left during the giving away known as the Vidaii.
In lieu of a traditional reception, they threw a cocktail party at Houndstooth. Rosarito’s food truck catered the party, and people were treated to popsicles from Cold Ones. I loved watching everyone just enjoying themselves, everyone was so stylish, so happy, it was just good vibes all around.
