Sydney and Brett got ready together at a property inconspicuously tucked away on South Congress. Upon arrival, the elaborately decorated car indicated I was at the right place. Once I entered through the gate into a garden with a two-story house and a yard full of airstreams and tents, I was greeted by a hum of activity as their friends got ready for the day around them.
The script of the day was to not adhere to the traditions of a wedding. Instead, they wanted the photos to feel organic, to hang out with their friends, and experience their day fully. The informality allowed for spontaneity. As the preparations wrapped up, their friends did a head count and mused that a bus would be a far more practical way to travel. One friend made a phone call, and 15 minutes later, they were loading onto a bus to head to the courthouse. Following were Sydney and Brett in the decorated car, lovingly and unexpectedly decorated by their friend group.
Amongst their family and friends, Sydney and Brett's ceremony was on the steps of the Heman Marion Sweatt County Courthouse. We meandered the courthouse groups for a handful of portraits. Shortly, we were off to celebrate on the rooftop of the Jones Center. Everyone wore name tags labeled with "introvert," "extrovert," and "confused." A clever way for their guests from different facets of their lives to strike up a conversation with each other. It was Sydney and Brett's hope that their people enjoy their favorite food from Suerte, peruse the art of the Jones Center, and experience the scenic views of the downtown Austin skyline.
The traditional wedding was successfully subverted.
